Dota 2 Tournament Sells Out Arena in an Hour

If you didn't see Valve's documentary on the biggest Dota 2 tournament, Free to Play, It's been made pretty clear that e-sports is an actual thing now. It's a career choice for passionate gamers like the ones shown in the documentary. With the biggest prize pool of $1.6 million on the line, it showcased some of the absolute best Dota 2 players in the world.

This year, the annual Dota 2 tournament is hosted in Seattle's Key Arena and within a single weekend, 10,000 - yes that's right -10,000 seats were sold in under an hour. This number is unbelievable and that's an understatement. If you can sell 10,000 seats in an hour for watching people play video games, then it's about damn time that the entire world seriously take a look at E-sports. Valve is looking to spearhead Dota 2 as the face of e-sports and with ridiculous figures and statistics like this, It's looking really good for Valve and e-sports.

It's rather hard to comprehend that a couple of years ago, e-sports wasn't even a thing. People laughed at the idea of gaming for money. And some still do today. While I'm not in any way a big fan of Dota 2, or e-sports for that matter, I still think that Dota 2 will help open up the gates for other types of purely skill-based games to be considered as an e-sport. Titanfall is definitely in the conversation as an e-sports type of game combining fast-paced action, strategy and MOBA elements. Oh, and of course, Titans. Another game that should be in the talks as an e-sports type of game is the classic Counter Strike. There aren't any signs of level-dependency in that game so it would make sense if more tournaments for shooting games or maybe even sports games will be held.

When first hearing about e-sports, I didn't think it was a thing. But after watching the documentary, I did see some similarities with normal sports. You play in teams. The games are part skill and part strategy. You need to practice hard to become good at the games. In a way, it captures a lot of the major aspects about regular sports like Basketball or Football. It's for this reason alone probably why many people have taken such an interest in e-sports. Heck, they sold out 10,000 seats in under an hour, what other proof that e-sports is legit do you need?
